Employers reconsidering degree requirement for jobs

Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The job market across the country is rapidly changing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, another trend may put even more power in the hands of the employee.

With close to two jobs for each of the 6 million unemployed workers, employers are beginning to reconsider the need for a four-year degree before entering their profession.

According to a recent survey by analysts at intelligent.com, one in four college graduates over the age of 25 are earning less than $35,000 annually, showing the value of the diploma is decreasing.

“It used to be that that piece of paper meant more money, it meant that you could go into the workforce and make more money,” said hiring expert Trevor Houston. “But now it’s not a differentiator, it’s not separating you, it’s not making you more valuable.”

Houston says due to the abundance of information available for free, he believes this trend is unlikely to reverse course, except in specialized fields.
